Jonah Study #1 Pastor Jason

Jonah Study #1                                    Westside BC                                                    03-19-14

Jonah – many books written on Jonah, Sunday school lessons, murals painted in kids’ classrooms

The size of NINEVEH is revealed in the Bible, in Jonah 3:3 and 4:11 (A 3 days journey in breadth with over 120,000 people 4:11). The classical writers describe NINEVEH as being over 60 miles wide. The city of Nineveh is described in Genesis 10:11 as having been founded by Nimrod, the hunter who built the tower of Babel and led the world into a rebellion against God.

Some scholars cast doubt upon the story but I believe God.

I. The calling – Let’s notice a few things about the people God has used in the past:

Jacob was a cheater; Peter had a temper; David had an affair; Noah got drunk; Jonah ran from God; Paul was a murderer; Gideon was insecure; Miriam was a gossiper; Martha was a warrior; Thomas was a doubter; Sarah was impatient; Elijah was depressed; Moses stuttered and was also a murderer; Zacchaeus was short; Abraham was old and Lazarus was dead!  God doesn’t call the qualified he qualifies the called!  Thou you are not perfect, know that God is working in your life anyway.  1 Tim 3 and Titus 1

When God calls, He’ll give you a message.  Stay in the book!  About the call of God:

            1. High calling – Call from God.  Read 1 Thess. 2:1-12 – HE CALLED YOU TOO!

            2. Holy calling –

1Pe 1:15  But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation.

1Pe 2:9  But ye are  a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light:  Mt. 5:16

            3. Heavenly calling (peaceful doing will of God)

II. The Command – Vs. 2 Arise and Go (implies putting forth some effort!  Get off your seat of complacency and get busy for me (God)).

Mt. 28:19-20 – Go Ye into all the world……

Luke 14:23  And the lord said unto the servant, Go out into the highways and hedges, and compel them to come in, that my house may be filled.  (heaven and church)

Desire to see Church house full – why? Romans 10:17       Why the command?

            1. Urgency of the hour – God was going to destroy Nineveh in 40 days.

            2. Unavoidable Judgment - 1 Cor. 5:10 – we better get busy for God.

            3. Unconcern for God (not interested) R 3:10-11 – There is none righteous….

Are you doing all you can to get the Gospel to a lost and dying world? Command is still go…..

Seeing lost souls cast into lake of fire……Rev. 20:11-15

Jonah, do all you can to get the word of God out to the people.  Pr. 11:30.

III. The Cry (preach) –

Cry against - To call out; proclaim; pronounce; to preach

Is. 58:1 cry aloud…..make noise.  Don’t be soft and quiet – IE: House of Fire!

Church member: Preach! and use words if you must.  See a sermon…..

1. Why was Jonah to preach?

            A. Sinfulness of Nineveh        2 Tim. 3:1-5

            B. Sympathy of the Savior       2 Peter 3:9

            C. Simplicity of Salvation        3:5 – believed; Jn. 3:16; vs. 8 & 10  repented
