Jonah #2                                                                                                          03-26-14 pm

Review from last week: Vs. 1-2

I. Calling of Jonah

            1. High Calling            2. Holy Calling            3. Heavenly Callling

II. Command of Jonah – Arise and go Why the command?

            1. Urgency of the hour – God was going to destroy Nineveh in 40 days.

            2. Unavoidable Judgment - 1 Cor. 5:10 – we better get busy for God.

            3. Unconcern for God (not interested)

III. Cry of Jonah  Why was Jonah to preach?

1. Sinfulness of Nineveh         2 Tim. 3:1-5

2. Sympathy of the Savior      2 Peter 3:9

            3. Simplicity of Salvation

This evening’s text is Jonah 1:2 again

When God spoke to Jonah and told him what He wanted him to do, Jonah then had a decision to make; whether to obey or not obey. Yield to the Spirit or flesh. God is not going to force us to love Him/yield to Him.  He has a job for all of us; will you yield yourself to His will?

Evil flourishes when good men do nothing

We noticed last week why God wanted Jonah to preach.  Now let’s consider perhaps some reasons why Jonah refused to obey God’s command:

I. Perhaps the fear of the people overshadowed his faith.  Legitimate fear! Wicked….FEAR:

Has torments  - 1Jn 4:8  He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love. (afraid of what other people will do or say to you or about you)  READ Num. 13:25-33

Are you afraid to share your faith?  Ps. 118:6    Mt. 10:28     2 Tim. 1:7 –spirit of fear….FEAR can

            A.  silence our witness

B.  stump our walk (with Christ) – should share our faith

II. Some may believe that perhaps he was weak in faith – not so (4:1-2)  Nonetheless, weak faith can cause us not to obey God.

            Heb. 11:6        2 Cor. 5:7 – walk by faith       READ Romans 4:19-22

Faith is simply believing God will do what He said He would do.

For All I Trust Him.    Phil. 4:19;        Mt. 6:33          Is. 26:3

If your faith is weak, your work will never be strong.

III. Perhaps he failed to recognize the need of the people.

Not only did he fail to recognize the need of the people, but he also failed to recognize the true need in his own life. He wanted to run from God but that’s not what he needed.  (More of that next week). He needed to be in center of God’s will.  Safer to be in God’s will!!  Do you see the need to be close to Christ?                     (Jonah only seen their faults)

People of Nineveh needed:

1. Hell preached to them

A soft msg. on loving your neighbor wasn’t going to bring them to repentance! “Yet forty days and Nineveh shall be overthrown”   (Gal. 4:16) Heaven, hell, judgment.

2. Hope presented to them   (although Jonah’s message didn’t offer much hope)

Eph 2:12  That at that time ye were without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers from the covenants of promise, having no hope, and without God in the world:   (Col. 1:27 – Christ in you the hope of glory)

There’s hope for the drunkard, dope addict, religionist, etc. Jn. 14:6

Importance of getting the Gospel out!    What are some ways we can get the Gospel out?

1. Gospel tracts (few by steps, not many – move holder)

2. Radio / TV (Fireball Special – tailor to WBC now)  CD/DVD

3. Internet - Are we at Westside doing all we can to get the Gospel out?

4. VBS            - kids (parents) aren’t going to come to us!

5. Revivals

Start with end in mind.  goals / target.  STEPS to achieve our end results.
