Jonah Study #3 Pastor Jason

Jonah Study #3                                                                                               04-02-14

Now let’s consider perhaps some reasons why Jonah refused to obey God’s command:

1. Perhaps the fear of the people overshadowed his faith.

2. Some may believe that perhaps he was weak in faith – not so (4:1-2)  Nonetheless, weak faith can cause us not to obey God.

3. Perhaps he failed to recognize the need of the people.

Jonah #3 Text Vs. 3

Whenever you’re not right with God, you don’t want to be close to God.  Nor those that are living for God.  Why? 1 Jn. 1:7 – If we walk in the light……You’re not walking in light. (Jesus)

Jonah’s

I. Choice

His Decision – couldn’t blame anyone else.  Decisions begin in the mind, settle in the heart and is portrayed in our actions. (Battlefield is in the mind.  Eph. 6)

Other Bible characters that did not listen to God:

1. Adam and Eve played first blame game.

2. Samson

3. Prodigal Son – Luke 15

Like Jonah, we all have a choice to make; whether to live for God or not.  Three reasons why I want to choose to live for God.

            1. What He’s done for me (past) Eph 2:1  And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins; - SO UNDESERVING!

            2. What He’s doing for me now – Presence of the Holy Ghost

            3. What He’s going to do for me in the future. – 1 Cor. 2:9 – Eye hath not seen….

Thought he’d be better off running from God.  Carnal nature thinks that way.

So what’s your choice/Decision?  Does God have your heart?

II. Cost

Wasn’t free.  He paid to be miserable.  There’s a high cost of living without God.  What did it cost Jonah?

            1. Treasure – VS. 3c  He paid to run from God.

            2. Time away from God. – (Wasted time – just what Satan wants us to do!)

Eph. 5:16 – Redeeming the time, because the days are evil

            3. Testimony – Vs. 9-10 – Reputation vs. Testimony. (priceless!) Not a Godly  influence on lost men.  Lot also was an ungodly influence.                       Your children

What cost are you willing to pay in order to get away from God?  100 years from now, will it be worth it?   Invest our time in things of God

III. Consequence (of running from God)

            1. No rest (flee – run away) Is. 57:21 – There is no peace saith my God to the wicked.  Mt. 11:28-30 –rest!

            2. No Refugee – (place of safety) from the presence of the LORD – How far do you have to go to get away from God?

            3. No Restoration - the act of restoring; renewal, revival, or reestablishment. To put back to its original state.  (smashed front quarter panel on a car)  The body shop mechanic must be able to get his hands on the wrecked car if he is to fix it. – JESUS must be able to get His hands in your life if He is to restore you back the your heavenly Father.
