Jonah Study #5                                                                                               04-16-14

Review of last week:

I. Awareness Vs. 1-3              He was fully aware that God was speaking to him.

I’m aware of God - Are you aware that HG convicts you at:  (1) Salvation     (2) Sin

I’m aware of Satan (Destroying people, churches, marriages, etc.)

II. Attitude – Let’s notice Jonah’s attitude toward

1. God: Uncooperative – disrespectful, dishonoring

      2. Towards Others: B/c of his bad attitude, didn’t care he was putting lives of others

            at risk.

Jonah’s problem was between him and God, but it affected those around him.

Bad attitude isn’t the problem – it’s a symptom of a problem.  Heart is the problem.

***Does your attitude  please the Lord?  At work? Church?  Home?  Warm env?

How do I have an attitude adjustment?

1. Desire a change of attitude

2. Admit it’s your attitude that needs changing

3. View your bad attitude as sin – b/c breaks fellowship with the Lord

4. Determine daily to have a good attitude    R 8:28

III. Actions – He ran from God.

IV. Apathy Vs. 5

I. Fear of Safety

Running from God never causes peace, only turmoil.  God’s people should be peaceful people. Mat 5:9  Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God   Jn. 14:27 – Peace I leave with you…..Isaiah 26:3  Jonah did this to himself.  Is. 57:21        Peace with God vs. Peace of God

            Romans 5:1 – Therefore being justified……              Phil. 4:6-7 – be careful….

Mariners had fear of:

            1. Storm – ship was going down.  Vs. 4c  desperate.  time of uncertainty  Storms of life: finances, family, death, disease, divorce, devastation (Job), etc. Storm can come when we least expect them. storm like no other. Fear of unknown, experience had little value

Storm in your life like no other.  Don’t know what to do….

            2. Stubborn preacher – vs. 9-10.  Not many fear a man of God nowadays…..could it be b/c so many have lived a poor example before others (such as Jonah). You can put a magnifying glass on me…..I’m not perfect…… We effect others whether good or bad.  Sometimes storms in our lives can be brought on by ourselves. Disobedience

II. Futile Supplication – worthless (gods)

They did what was natural – seek for worldly help. They turned to the wrong gods for answer to their problems.  Many turn to alcohol, drugs, gangs, rebellion, religion, psychologist, pills, self help books.

After they tried their gods, they called on the Big G –God out of desperation!

Storms will either drive us from God or draw us to God.  Bitter or better.

They cast lots.  Of course it fell on Jonah, because God is in control.

They finally recognized the One that could control their storm!  During your storm, you better look to God for help!!!!!  Ps. 121:1-2

Jesus is the only one that can calm the troubled soul!!!!

III. Fruitless Struggle

Tree produces fruit – has value to the body. Benefits.

They tried fixing problem themselves – experienced sailors! – threw cargo overboard

Problem was, they tried fixing problems without turning to God first.

Satan doesn’t want us to turn to God – in God there’s strength, direction, power.

Struggles in life shows us our need for Christ!  Alcohol, pornography, gambling, lusting, anger, family, etc.  Gal. 2:20 – I am crucified with….

Trust Him with my struggles!

I struggle sometimes: lack of faith, fear of unknown, fear of being accepted by others, pleasing God.  WHAT ARE YOU STRUGGLING WITH? YOU NEED GOD?

Worrying is like a rocking chair – gives you something to do but gets you nowhere.

You can’t have worries and peace at the same time.

IV. False Security

Unaware of the coming storm. Unconcerned.  Many Christians are unaware or unconcerned of the coming judgment.

.  Devil has rocked us fast to sleep.

Why are we unconcerned?

1. People of Pleasure –2 Tim. 3:4 -  lovers of pleasure more than lovers of God.

2. People of Prosperity – Lk. 17:26 – as in the days of Noe…. – unconcerned of judgment

3. People of Procrastination - Heb 3:15  While it is said, To day if ye will hear his voice,

harden not your hearts, as in the provocation.
