Jonah Study #6

Jonah Study #6                                                                                               04-23-14

Review of last week’s lesson:

I. Fear of Safety

Running from God never causes peace, only turmoil.  God’s people should be peaceful people.

Mariners had fear of:

            1. Storm

            2. Stubborn preacher

II. Futile Supplication – worthless (gods)

They turned to the wrong gods for answer to their problems.  Many turn to alcohol, drugs, gangs, rebellion, religion, psychologist, pills, self help books.

III. Fruitless Struggle

They tried fixing problem themselves – experienced sailors! – threw cargo overboard

Problem was, they tried fixing problems without turning to God first.

IV. False Security

Unaware of the coming storm. Unconcerned.

Why are we unconcerned?

1. People of Pleasure –2 Tim. 3:4 -  lovers of pleasure more than lovers of God.

2. People of Prosperity – Lk. 17:26 – as in the days of Noe…. – unconcerned of judgment

3. People of Procrastination - Heb 3:15  While it is said, To day if ye will hear his voice,

harden not your hearts, as in the provocation.________________________________

Introfor Lesson 6:

This was no doubt the scariest storm they had ever encountered. In their minds, this was the worst thing they ever had to face/go through.  It seemed as though all hope was lost………what appeared to be the worst thing that ever happened to them, turned out to be the BEST thing that ever happened to them (b/c it allowed them to see their need for God! – vs. 14 and 16).

The storms you face may seem to be the worst things happening to you but it may be the BEST thing that ever happened to someone else!  Romans 8:28!!!

Notice three things concerning vs. 12-16:

I. Exhausted all Efforts vs. 12

       1. Mentally, emotionally, and phy. exhausting.  Could not fix problems on their own

Our natural response is to fix things ourselves. We should live in the supernatural

       2. Didn’t listen to the man of God. – when we’re not right with God, we usually

don’t want to know what the man of God (or God) has to say.

They cried out to God:

            1. After they were afraid – fear motivates us to action.

            2. As a last resort. Vs. 13

II. Exercised their Faith  vs. 14 and 16

1. Proves that God can get our attention  Php 2:10-11  That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and under the earth; An that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

2. They completely relied on God and God alone (not God plus water, etc.)

Me swinging and trusting the chains to hold me up.  (this is God’s desire)

3. Crying out from the heart is only requirement for getting God’s attention.

Vs. 14  I beseech  thee……oh now!    Heb. 11:6        F.A.I.T.H.

We exercise our faith by being doers of the word and not hearers only – Js. 1:22

III. Eliminated their Problem vs. 15 (first had to identify their problem)

If car idling rough – no good to change the tire!        They focused on the cargo!

Can’t fix attitude without first fixing heart. Rebellion.

Pro 23:26  My son, give me thine heart,  (not head)

What is causing the storms in your life? Drama with coworker? Family?   Pull away

It’s not easy getting rid of the things/people that’s weighing you down.

Mariners didn’t want to get rid of Jonah (their problem).  At first they thought they’d rather keep their problem than to have peace with God.

Is your own heart before God your true problem? Why do you have so much turmoil between you and the Lord? Ask God to show you real problem. Unconfessed sin.
