Jonah Study #7

Jonah Study #7                                                                                               04-30-14

Review of Week #6

I. Exhausted all Efforts vs. 12

II. Exercised their Faith  vs. 14 and 16

1. Proves that God can get our attention

2. They completely relied on God and God alone (not God plus water, etc.)

3. Crying out from the heart is only requirement for getting God’s attention.

III. Eliminated their Problem vs. 15 (first had to identify their problem)

If car idling rough – no good to change the tire!        They focused on the cargo!

Can’t fix attitude without first fixing heart. Rebellion.

It’s not easy getting rid of the things/people that’s weighing you down.

Mariners didn’t want to get rid of Jonah (their problem).  At first they thought they’d rather keep their problem than to have peace with God

Can u identify with Jonah?  Let’s notice two (of the six) things about Jonah this evening:

I. Rebellion – means defiance of authority; rise up against authority; stubborn

The rebellious person never comes out on top.  Always rooted in the letter “I”

            I want, I desire. I deserve, I must have, I must get……Not Christ but I

            Satan rebelled in Isaiah 14:12-17

Nimrod rebelled in Gen. 10:8-10; ch. 11 tower of babel.  name means rebel

            Jonah – text

            Samson – Judges 16

Prodigal Son – Luke 15 – rebellion always leads a person away from God.

So what about you? Rebel against supervisor? God? Spouse?  Eph. 5:21 – submitting yourselves one to another…..

Rebellion in heart – indicator you’re not right with God.  How do we keep a rebellious spirit out of our hearts?  Js. 4:7 – submit yourselves therefore to God…..

Submission in action vs. attitude.  “Those convinced against their will…..”

II. Resistance (towards God)  three days!

Resist means to fight against; to oppose or withstand.

 Jonah resisted:

            1. Word of God – vs. 1 – It’s important to pay attention during preaching!

            2. Will of God - preach

            3. Work of God – (work of HG) to bring us to God.  Jn. 12:32

Col_1:20  And, having made peace through the blood of his cross, by him to reconcile all things unto himself; by him, I say, whether they be things in earth, or things in heaven.

Act_7:51  Ye stiffnecked and uncircumcised in heart and ears, ye do always resist the Holy Ghost: as your fathers did,  so do  ye.

Rom_13:2  Whosoever therefore resisteth the power, resisteth the ordinance of God: and they that resist shall receive to themselves damnation.

Joh_6:44  No man can come to me, except the Father which hath sent me draw him: and I will raise him up at the last day.

Results of Resisting God:  Jonah was:

            1. Mistaken – thought running from God was his best option.  Pr. 14:12

            2. Misbehaved – Our behavior is directly related to our relationship with Christ

            3. Misfortune (trouble) Pr. 13:15 - but the way of transgressors is hard.

4. Miserable – Finally (after 3 days!)  cried out to God for help. TEXT

Wanted a change.

Jonah looked to God for an answer. He’s God of love, joy, peace, patience, self control, etc.  Is this you?

He got alone with God!  How much alone time do you spend with the Lord?  Away from people, distractions of world. God can help you when others can’t!
